HIRDO

WHO We Are?

Horn International Relief and Development (HIRDO) is one of the humanitarian organizations working in Somalia for the last fifteen years to assist and support the most vulnerable communities in Somalia especially children under five, women, older and persons with disabilities. The major drivers of vulnerability include climate change, conflicts, poverty and political instability hence leading to humanitarian crisis which itself creates high rate of malnutrition, displacements, unemployment and instability. Meanwhile, HIRDO as an operational organization is legally registered organization with the Ministry of Interior and federalism of the federal government, and federal member states including Hirshabelle and Galmudug state as well as Benadir regional administration.

The organization’s headquarter is in Mogadishu where the main office is based while handling the overall management and operational functions including planning, organizing, directing and controlling program implementation. The organization has board of directors consisting of five (three male and two female) whose task include oversight and management, budgeting, developing policies, fundraising as well as developing organizational strategy. The BOD has the responsibility to select the Executive Officer as he implements the strategies developed by the board and manages the day-to-day operations of the organization. The ED’s performance affects the overall effectiveness of the organization and determines its development. In a unique way, HIRDO is committed to promoting rights of older people and persons with disabilities (PWDs) including through gender equality and empowerment across all age groups and abilities.

Summary on our Interventions

Since establishment, we have managed to implement projects such as emergency response, food security and livelihoods, health and nutrition, protection and human rights, education and skills development as well as WASH in Benadir, Southwest, Hirshabelle and Galmudug. HIRDO is currently implementing nutrition, WASH, protection and Capacity strengthening projects in Benadir region, Hirshabelle and Galmudug states with the support of UNICEF, WFP and Help Age International. HIRDO is SPHERE focal point for Somalia. HIRDO works closely with communities, making significant progress in addressing the needs of the most vulnerable populations in the affected areas.

Because of HIRDO projects, vulnerable communities are able to receive the much-needed life-saving assistance in times of crisis, contributing to improved well-being of the targeted beneficiaries. We have developed different strategic organizational policies aimed at different interventions through all-inclusive and participatory approach while working in close consultation with the local communities, to ensure ownership and sustainability of our intervention strategies.

OBJECTIVES OF HIRDO

Improve the life quality of community members using community based approach and enable communities identify problems in their communities, formulate and implement both short and long term activities to solve those problems and better manage their resource base in the Horn of Africa.

Enable communities to mobilize human resources and financial capital from local and external sources so as to attend to humanitarian emergencies to assist affected communities prepare for future disasters in the Horn of Africa.

Reduce poverty and improve the quality of living in a sustainable manner by implementing integrated community development programs such as raise awareness about existing social (gender and children) structure through human rights advocacy and gender sensitizations in the whole of Somalia
